VOLCOM GLAM ROCK VQS OZ CHAMPIONSHIPS 2011

The Final Volcom Stone’s Totally Crustaceous surf series for 2010 / 2011 hit Manly Beach last Friday and Saturday.

With finalist from all over Australia turning up to compete for the title and a shot at the trip to Newport Beach, California up for grabs in both the juniors and opens division to compete in the international VQS Champs. With the 3 to 4 foot south swell rolling in, we knew there was going to be some crazy surfing going down over the 2 days

The stage was set, guitars where plugged in, the drums ready to be bashed and all the rockers dressed in there leopard skin pants and there tight denim jackets where ready to head bang , stage dive and rock there way to the man on man finals.

First act up for the day was the Glitter girls with the first 2 going straight in to the quarter finals and 3rd and 4rd having to battle it out in the bonus round . With 15 minute heats best 2 waves for the first few rounds, surfers had to be quick with there wave selection as the condition were predicted to pick up as the day progressed.We head banged our way into the Glam grom’s first round with all competitors surfing way above and beyond there age.

It wasn’t all about the surfing with loads of giver aways up on stage with yoyo and air guitar competition, crazy jam session on the drums and all the Glam Rock fun you could expect to find at the Volcom OZ Championships.

Day one was finished off with the Juniors , opens first round , Quarter finals of the girls and groms. What a day sunny, fun waves and kids everywhere rock’in out.

We woke up on Saturday to the sound of bucketing down rain and a 30 not south wind but as they say the show must go on . So we went in to damage control, sand bagging the tents the best we could, putting extra banners up to try and protect us from the rain and just prayed the whole contest side doesn’t blow away.The good thing was the waves had picked up so at 8am we got the junior and open quarters under way with Cooper Chapman a stand out in the Juniors and Daniel Vardy in the opens.

With the rain pooring down we moved onto the semi finals with only the winner from each semi going through to the man on man finals.Before the finals started we had the Electric Volt Thrower expression session with guest appearance from volcom’s Ozzie Wright, Jordy Lawler, Blake Levett and locals Dan Karen and Luke Cheadle. $500 going to the winner Luke Cheadle who pulled a huge air reverse.

The Glitter girls final was up first with Ali Kelly ripping her way to the win over Winni Paul, then we moved into the Glam grom’s with Jacob Willcox scoring an 8.5 and an 8.0 on his way to a win over Cody Robinson.Jacob Willcox made another appearance in the Jumping Juniors final with a solid performance against Volcom’s own Jordy Lawler with both scoring rides in the high nines but at the end of the day there would only be one winner off to America and that was Jordy Lawler.

We finished the day with the pro am division, Daniel Vardy came out firing with a really nice left hander doing two huge turns and taking the lead. Then it was Dan Karen turn to put on a show catching two fast waves and taking the early lead off Vardy.Wave for wave both Dan’s went with the lead changing time after time and just when it looked like Vardy had won Dan Karen paddle into a nice left hander with 15 seconds to go , needing a 7.5 to win jammed three big turns and scored an 7.8 and went home with the win and the ticket to the U.S.

VOLCOM VQS NEW ZEALAND


The Volcom VQS series hit New Zealand on the weekend ,the plan was for the event to be run on Saturday at Raglan on the famous point break but as surfers we all know that mother nature doesn’t always come to the party.We arrived on sun up at Raglan’s manu bay to find it dead flat and howling off shore.The local boys told me of this wave 20 minutes south that always has waves called Ruapuke Beach, swell magnet they said . So the decision was made to move the event.Off we went in the Volcom van winding around the muddy cliff top roads in the pouring rain. When we arrived at the beach to find the waves where rolling in at around 2 inches, we had to make the call to have a lay day and run the event the next day back at Ruapuke and just pray for a little bump in the swell over night.

The next day we got to the Beach to find 2 to 3 foot waves in the corner ,we had made the right decision . The comp was on , with air tickets to the World VQS Championships in Newport Beach California up for grabs we new there would be some crazy surfing going down.

We started of the day with the juniors at around 8am,everyone looked amped we had the music pumping fun waves loads of prizes and by the end the day there would be two people going home with air tickets to America.

After that we went into the opens which had a really strong showing with all the local rippers, Volcom own Luke Cederman went mad in his first heat finding some good left handers in to the rocks.

By the mid afternoon we got into the business end of the event with the girls final up first, Alexis pouter started the heat with an 8 point ride and backed it up with a 5 ,surfing really top to bottom making it look so easy. Then we had the grom final with Ben Wallis coming home with the win in front of Taylor Hutchingson and in 3rd was Isac kettle.

The Junior final was won by Elliot Pacerata Reid, winning himself a flight to Newport Beach California for the world VQS championship. Next up we had the pro am division which was the closes heat of the day with only 2 points between 1st and 4th places but at the end we could only have one winner and that was Zen Wallis. Well done and good luck at the world Champs.

VOLCOM TOTALLY CRUSTACOUS TOUR/ AVALON BEACH

Volcom’s Totally Crustaceous tour stopped off at Sydney’s Avalon Beach over the weekend. This was the last chance for people to qualify for the VQS championships at Manly Beach on April 15-16th 2011 so we new this one was going to be huge. We had to postpone this event in December due to lack of swell, so as the sun pocked itself up over the horizon we where very happy to see a perfect right hand bank off the pool with some really nice 4 footers.



The boys started to get the tents up as I was left to do the sign up, it started with about 20 groms asking the same question over and over, when is my heat, what age am I in, can I go in 2 age groups . This was fine till the numbers started to grow from 20 to 40 then to 80 then there was over 140 people fighting to get an entry form, no one wanted to miss out today with the waves pumping.

So we decided when the numbers hit over 160 we where going to do 10 minute heats best 1 wave or risk surfing the finals in the dark.

Once we had the draw up around 730am,it was time to get the heats under way so we started with the Groms, Juniors , Opens and then the girls. There were some big up sets in the early rounds with Cooper Chapman booming out of the juniors but he did redeem himself later in the day by winning the final from Volcom’s own David Vlug, they were the stand outs off the day scoring huge in the final both busting big ariels in the dieing seconds. Cooper also took home Electrics Volt Thrower award for landing a huge grab ariel earning 50 cash for his effort.

There where a few new things going on at this event with Boony on the hat press printing Volcon VQS hats on demand and we also had GSI (global surf industries) bring down 11 demo boards for people to ride, the fin-less boards were a hit with the groms.

We made the finals 15 minutes best 2 waves, the girl’s were up first with Freya Prum winning ,next in the water was Grom’s with Jackson Baker taking that one out with 2 high scoring rides, and Jake Sylvester won the Junior’s with a total of 15.5 out off 20.

The last heat off the day was a cracker with it coming down to the dieing seconds, Copper Chapman and David Vlug both from Narrabeen going mad with some crazy new school surfing but in the end there could only be one winner and that Cooper.

VOLCOM VQS HITS GUNNAMATTA BEACH VICTORIA


We arrived at Gunnamtta beach carpark at 530am for the 4th stop on Volcom's Totally Crustaceous Tour 2010/11.We couldn't see much as the sun was yet to rise but as we walked down the path and stepped out on to the lookout it hit me in the face like a punch from Mike Tyson, 35 knot on shore!
We had to get moving, putting these tents up was going to be a huge task. The first tent was bending inside-out and we battled with it for half an hour before reinforcements arrived with a drill and some roofing bolts.
Once the tents where bolted to the lookout it was game on! People started arriving in car loads,it takes more than a little onshore wind to stop them down there.

The day started off with the pro am division,with our best turn out all year!
The draw filled up in 20 minutes, with the juniors next, then groms and then girls.

Mitch Baker was the surfer of the day taking out the Electric Bolt Thrower with a huge air reverse scoring himself $50 and also taking out the pro am division. Coming in 2nd was Caiden Fowler, 3rd Tom Allen and 4th Cal Nicolson.

The Juniors final was really exciting with it coming down to the dieing seconds when Tom Lyon jagged a really nice wave scoring a 6.5 and taking out the final by 0.5 from Tom Antonie. Grant Williams got 3rd and 4th Brock Warren.

The groms final was really close with only 1.5 between 1st and 4th but at the end of the day we can only have one winner,Tristan Farras! In 2nd was Cody Robinson,3rd Francis Meade and 4th Joel Van Dijk.


We finished the day off with a presentation around 4pm with all finalist taking home huge prize packs and winning a spot in the VQS Championships which will be held at Manly Beach on the 15th and 16th of
April.
